Michael Green

SOCIAL PROGRESS ECONOMIST

Economist Michael Green is the CEO of the Social Progress Imperative, a nonprofit focusing on redefining the way we quantify progress in the world, measuring society across dimensions and indicators that actually matter: basic human needs, foundations of wellbeing, and opportunity. The organization’s best-known initiative is
the Social Progress Index (SPI), a multi-indicator index that assesses the social and environmental performance of different countries. The SPI is an effort to complement the measure of national performance, which is still mostly done using traditional economic metrics such as GDP. It has been adopted widely around the world since its launch in 2013. Previously, Green worked for the UK government and taught economics. He is the author of several books on the future of capitalism.
